About Us

My name is Nguyen Trung Kien, or Kien Nguyen in the Western way of writing names. On this page, I would like to provide some background about myself, this website, and the motorbike touring company behind the services and tours promoted here.

After many years of motorbiking throughout Northern Vietnam, I acquired, developed, and began running this website in late 2013. My main purpose has always been to share with riders from around the world how beautiful Vietnam is, particularly the remote mountains and countryside that are best explored by motorcycle. I also want to share some of the best motorcycling routes in Vietnam and provide useful information for riders who want to explore the country independently.

Despite the domain name, I am in no way associated with a business called Freewheelin’ Tours in Hanoi. This website is my personal project and hobby, and I use it mainly to share my experience and support friends working in the local motorcycle tourism industry.

I personally recommend Offroad Vietnam Adventure Travel, a company offering outdoor adventures in Vietnam, including motorbike tours, cycling, 4×4 adventures, and small-group cruises. Unlike many conventional travel companies in Vietnam, they do not focus on large-group tours by bus. About Offroad Vietnam Adventure Travel

Offroad Vietnam Adventure Travel was founded in late 2006 by two local motorcycle riders, Anh Wu and Minh Hoang, who recognized the growing demand from riders around the world who wanted to explore Vietnam on two wheels.

When they first started their motorbike touring business in Vietnam, the Russian Minsk 2-stroke 125cc was one of the main choices available for motorcycle adventures. Although the Minsk had its own legendary character, it was relatively weak, unreliable, and consumed approximately 5-6 liters of fuel per 100 km. The founders realized that the time for this famous “iron buffalo” was coming to an end and that riders needed a more reliable and capable motorcycle.

They eventually switched to four-stroke Honda road and dirt bikes, ranging from approximately 125cc to 250cc. The team had already owned and ridden Honda motorcycles for many years and understood why they were such a practical choice for traveling around Vietnam. Honda motorcycles are reliable, spare parts are easy to find, and local mechanics are familiar with them. There is even a popular saying among Vietnamese people that demonstrates how important the brand is: “Honda” is often used almost as a synonym for “motorbike” in Vietnam.

Vietnam is a true motorbike nation, and there is arguably no better way to experience the country than from the seat of a motorcycle. However, a successful and safe motorcycle adventure requires good preparation, reliable bikes, experienced guides, and local knowledge.
