In general, this spectacular Northeast Vietnam motorbike tour follows mostly sealed roads, taking you deep into a fairy-tale region of dramatic mountains, winding valleys, and remote ethnic villages. Incredible limestone karst scenery dominates the route for hundreds of kilometres through areas inhabited by Nung, Tay, Kinh, and H’mong communities. Along the way, we visit the spectacular Ban Gioc Waterfall on the Chinese border and ride to Pac Bo Cave, the historic site where Ho Chi Minh began organizing the Vietnamese resistance.

NORTHEAST VIETNAM DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Hanoi – Lang Son. (~150 km, ~5 hours)

After a hearty breakfast, we get ready and make our way out of Hanoi, leaving the busy city behind as we head into the quieter countryside. We ride through the lowlands and plains of the Red River Delta, gradually transitioning into the mountainous landscape of Northeast Vietnam. As we head northeast, a dramatic wall of limestone mountains rises on our left, offering the first glimpse of the spectacular karst scenery that defines this region.

Depending on time and road conditions, you can leave the main route and ride up toward the summit of Mau Son Mountain. From the top, enjoy panoramic views across the surrounding mountains and, on a clear day, toward China and Ha Long Bay. Alternatively, we can take a side trip to explore the fascinating karst formations around Wind Cave before continuing toward Lang Son. Overnight in Lang Son.

Day 2: Lang Son – Cao Bang. (~160 km, ~6 hours)

In the morning, we strike northwest along the legendary Highway 4, one of the historic and scenic roads in Northeast Vietnam. We pass through Dong Dang and near the Friendship Gate on the Chinese border, before continuing deeper into the remote border region. The route follows a series of mountain passes and winding roads through a landscape that played an important role in the history of the Vietnamese resistance.

We then continue along remote backcountry roads toward Cao Bang, one of the most important gateways to the mountainous northeast. The scenery becomes increasingly dramatic as limestone peaks, narrow valleys, forests, and traditional villages surround the road. After a full day of riding through this spectacular region, we arrive in Cao Bang City, where we spend the night.

* Cao Bang: Located around 300 kilometres north of Hanoi, Cao Bang serves as an important base for our motorbike adventures near the Chinese border. The area north of Cao Bang is dominated by towering limestone karst formations, creating scenery remarkably similar to Ha Long Bay and Guilin in China. Riding through these remote mountain roads offers an unforgettable combination of winding passes, spectacular landscapes, traditional villages, and some of the best motorbiking in Northeast Vietnam.

Day 3: Cao Bang – Ban Gioc – Cao Bang. (~120 km, ~4 hours)

Today we explore the magical far northeast, riding deep into a spectacular region of towering limestone karst mountains, peaceful valleys, and remote ethnic villages. The road winds through and around countless dramatic limestone monoliths, creating one of the most scenic riding experiences in Northeast Vietnam. As we continue toward the Chinese border, the landscape becomes increasingly impressive before we finally reach the magnificent Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of Vietnam’s most spectacular natural attractions.

At Ban Gioc Waterfall, there is time to relax and enjoy the scenery, with the possibility of swimming beneath the falls and having a picnic on traditional bamboo rafts. In the afternoon, we take a different route back toward Cao Bang, looping through even more impressive karst landscapes, rice fields, and quiet mountain villages. This scenic loop is a highlight of any Vietnam motorbike tour.

* Ban Gioc Waterfall: Hidden in a remote border region where thousands of towering limestone monoliths rise above rice paddies cultivated by Nung, Tay, and Green H’mong communities, this area offers excellent riding on winding, mostly sealed mountain roads. The combination of spectacular scenery, quiet countryside, and traditional village life makes Ban Gioc Waterfall an unforgettable destination for adventure riders. The entire region rewards travelers who slow down, explore the smaller roads, and take time to experience the local culture.

Day 4: Cao Bang – Pac Bo – Cao Bang. (~160 km, ~5 hours)

In the morning, we ride northwest toward the Vietnam-China border, following roads surrounded by impressive mountain ranges and remote limestone karst scenery. Along the way, we stop at Pac Bo Cave, the historic location where Ho Chi Minh returned to Vietnam in 1941. From here, we continue onto a more challenging mountain road, climbing deeper into the remote karst country and passing through isolated valleys and dense forest.

Our ride eventually takes us to a secluded mountain lake hidden deep in the forest, providing a peaceful place to stop and enjoy the surrounding wilderness. In the late afternoon, we return to Cao Bang on a sealed mountain road. After a rewarding day of motorbiking in Northeast Vietnam, you can relax with a soothing massage before spending another night in Cao Bang.

* Pac Bo Cave: Located northwest of Cao Bang close to the Chinese border, Pac Bo Cave is particularly significant in Vietnamese history. It is best known as the first refuge of Ho Chi Minh after his return to Vietnam in 1941. Near the cave, the famous Lenin Stream flows through the forest before cascading over a waterfall from the Chinese side. We continue on foot into the surrounding jungle to explore this historic site and learn more about Vietnam’s independence movement and its connection to the remote borderlands.

Day 5: Cao Bang – Ba Be. (~170 km, ~7 hours)

Today we leave Cao Bang and ride southwest through a spectacular mountain region, crossing several winding mountain passes along the way. The route offers some of the most impressive scenery of the trip, with vast valleys, forest-covered mountains, limestone peaks, and traditional villages scattered throughout the countryside. One of the highlights is Cao Bac Pass, where breathtaking views open across the surrounding mountains and remote valleys.

After descending the pass, we pass hillsides covered with apiaries in one of Vietnam’s best-known honey-producing regions. The scenery gradually changes as we continue toward Ba Be Lake, riding deeper into the mountains and forests of Ba Be National Park. By late afternoon, we reach the lake and settle into a traditional Tay minority stilt house, where we spend the night with a local family on the shores of the lake.

* Ba Be Lake: Located around 240 kilometres north of Hanoi, this pristine mountain lake is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful natural lakes in Vietnam. Surrounded by primary jungle, limestone cliffs, and forested mountains, Ba Be Lake provides a peaceful contrast to the dramatic mountain roads experienced earlier in the trip. The surrounding area is home mainly to Tay and H’mong communities, making an overnight homestay an excellent opportunity to experience traditional village life during your Northeast Vietnam motorbike adventure.

Day 6: Ba Be Lake. Boating.

Today is a relaxing day to explore the natural beauty and local culture of Ba Be Lake. After several days of mountain riding, we take a break from the motorbikes and enjoy a variety of activities around Ba Be National Park. Depending on your interests, you can visit local markets, enjoy a peaceful boat cruise, go fishing, explore caves, or relax and enjoy a meal with friends beside a waterfall. Most importantly, this is a great opportunity to experience the warm hospitality of the local Tay and H’mong communities who have lived in this spectacular mountain region for generations.

We take a traditional boat along the approximately seven-kilometre length of Ba Be Lake, heading toward the impressive Dau Dang Waterfalls on the Gam River. Along the way, the boat passes through dramatic limestone scenery, forest-covered mountains, and quiet sections of the lake. We also visit Puong Cave, an impressive natural tunnel stretching for around 300 metres through the limestone mountains. During the war, the cave provided one of the few natural shelters where local people could seek protection from bombing.

After a full day exploring the lake and surrounding countryside, we return to our traditional Tay minority stilt house for another night with a local family on the shores of Ba Be Lake.

Day 7: Ba Be – Hanoi. (~240 km, ~8 hours) End of Northeast motorbike ride.

After breakfast, we begin the final riding day of our Northeast Vietnam motorbike tour, staying away from the main highways for as long as possible as we make our way back toward the Red River Delta and Hanoi. The route takes us through remote countryside inhabited by H’mong, Dao, Tay, and Nung communities, offering a final opportunity to experience the traditional villages, farmland, forests, and mountain landscapes of northern Vietnam.

The day’s ride combines a mixture of challenging backroads, rural tracks, winding mountain roads, and scenic sealed roads. As we gradually leave the mountains behind, the landscape changes from rugged highlands to the greener and more densely populated countryside of the Red River Delta. We continue toward Hanoi, bringing an unforgettable 7-day Northeast Vietnam motorbike adventure to an end.

After approximately 1,000 kilometres of riding through remote mountains, borderlands, ethnic villages, limestone karsts, waterfalls, and national parks, we arrive back in Hanoi, completing one of the most rewarding Vietnam motorcycle tours for riders looking to explore beyond the usual tourist routes.
