MAI CHAU TOUR BY MOTORBIKE
This 2-day Mai Chau motorbike tour takes you through the medium-sized mountains and beautiful valleys of northern Vietnam. Mai Chau Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Hanoi – Mai Chau. (~200 km, ~6 hrs)
We begin our Mai Chau motorcycle tour by leaving Hanoi on the quieter dike roads along the Red River and Da River, riding west toward Mai Chau via Son Tay and Hoa Binh. Our destination is a beautiful and peaceful valley inhabited mainly by White Thai people, one of the ethnic communities that make northern Vietnam so culturally diverse.
As we approach Mai Chau, the scenery changes dramatically, with limestone mountains, green rice fields, traditional villages, and colorful hill-tribe communities appearing along the route. There are opportunities to stop and visit local villages while learning more about the traditional lifestyle of rice-farming communities living along the Red River and lower Da River.
After lunch, we have the afternoon to explore the surrounding mountains. One highlight is riding up to the top of Thung Nhuoi Pass, where a spectacular viewpoint overlooks Mai Chau Valley. The summit is often covered in clouds and mist, creating an atmospheric panorama of the valley below. After enjoying the views, we descend from the pass and continue exploring the villages and countryside of the White Thai community.
In the evening, we enjoy a traditional local dinner before spending the night in a beautiful village beside the river. After dinner, there is an opportunity to gather around a fire and enjoy a traditional Thai music and dance performance.
Wearing their distinctive traditional clothing, Thai women invite visitors to join the famous Xoe dance, a lively cultural tradition in which hosts and guests dance together hand-in-hand to rhythmic music. Between dances, everyone can relax and sample ruou can, a traditional sticky-rice liquor enjoyed from a communal jar. Taking part in a Xoe dance around a fire in a remote Mai Chau village is a memorable Vietnam cultural travel experience that many visitors remember long after the tour.
Day 2: Mai Chau – Bai Chao – Hanoi. (180 km, ~5 hrs) End of Mai Chau Tour.
Because this is only a 2-day motorcycle tour from Hanoi, we take a different route back to make the ride more interesting. In the morning, we initially retrace part of yesterday’s route toward Cun Pass near Hoa Binh before turning onto a smaller rural road toward another peaceful valley via Bai Chao.
Rather than following busy Highway 6 all the way back to Hanoi, we prefer quieter roads whenever conditions allow. Highway 6 can be heavily congested, with numerous traffic lights and urban traffic as you approach Hanoi. Instead, we can take the dike roads from Son Tay or use smaller rural backroads and countryside lanes to return to the capital.
This alternative route makes the journey home much more enjoyable, allowing us to spend more time riding through Vietnamese countryside, rice fields, villages, and quiet local roads rather than dealing with heavy traffic.
By the end of the day, we arrive back in Hanoi and complete our Mai Chau motorbike tour – a short but rewarding motorcycle adventure combining mountain riding, beautiful scenery, and authentic Thai culture in northern Vietnam.
